Boredom: An Invitation?

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written,

The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. Psalm 139: 16

Recently, I've had several conversations with people who described feeling bored or restless. Their circumstances were different, but the underlying question was the same: Why do I feel like something is missing? As I prayed about it, I began to wonder if boredom isn't always a problem to solve, but rather an invitation from God.

As children, boredom often meant we needed something to entertain us. But as adults, chronic boredom may reveal something deeper. It may be pointing to a heart that has become disconnected from its God-given purpose.

Many of us spend years waiting for life to become more interesting. We hope a different job, new hobby, relationship, or vacation will fill the emptiness. Yet even after those things change, the restlessness often remains.

Why?

Because we were never created to live merely entertained. We were created to live with purpose.

Psalm 139 reminds us that God intentionally formed us and knew us before we were born. He designed each of us with unique gifts, passions, and assignments. Our lives were never meant to be accidental or aimless.

When we drift from living out that purpose, we often begin looking for external things to satisfy an internal longing.

  • Sometimes we call it boredom.

  • Sometimes loneliness.

  • Sometimes restlessness.

But beneath those feelings may be an invitation from the Holy Spirit to reconnect with the life He created us to live.

Rather than asking, "How can I make my life more exciting?" perhaps we should ask:

    • Lord, where are You inviting me to participate with You?

    • What gifts have You placed within me that I've neglected?

    • What dreams have I laid aside?

    • Where do You want me to serve, create, encourage, or build?

As we begin walking in the purpose God designed for us, something shifts. Our joy becomes less dependent on what others are doing and more rooted in who God created us to be.

Interestingly, this often strengthens our relationships as well. When two people are each growing into the people God created them to be, they bring new life, curiosity, and purpose into the relationship. Instead of expecting another person to keep us fulfilled, we begin living from the fullness we've found in Christ.

If you've been feeling bored lately, don't rush to fill the silence with more entertainment or distraction. Sit with the feeling for a moment.

Ask Holy Spirit what the feeling might be revealing

It may be that your boredom is not a problem to escape but an invitation to rediscover the purpose for which you were created.
